Executive Editor, Paper Magazine
PAPER Magazine, founded in 1984, is obsessed with all things fashion and pop culture, as well as the subcultures and lifestyles that surround them.
I’ve been fortunate enough to spend the past seven years – nearly the entirety of my professional career – at PAPER Magazine. Now, as Executive Editor, I’m responsible for overseeing our four print issues from top to bottom. I’ve been lucky to work on exciting projects like our recent Amanda Bynes cover story, a shoot with Rihanna at a NYC bodega at 2am and a crazy cover shoot with Leo Messi and a bunch of real-life goats in Barcelona.
I started by interning at various publications while still in college and then the summer I graduated, I began pitching story ideas freelance to editors. After getting some bylines, I reached out to Paper (out of the blue) and it just so happened they were looking for an Editorial Assistant. Seven years later, I’m still here.
I think it’s impossible to motivate others without setting an example yourself of what you’re seeking from colleagues, employees or interns. In that sense, I try to always meet deadlines, communicate well, work hard, listen and tackle challenges head on.
You only get one chance to make a good first impression so whether it’s a cold call, a cover letter or email, make sure it counts. I can’t tell you how many times people have emailed me and referred to the wrong magazine or misspelled my name – that is grounds for definitely seeing the email go in the trash folder. It’s also important to toe the line between being confident and poised while also being respectful and deferential…if you get the ratios wrong, it can really backfire.
A Day in My Life:
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
I love the bagel, smoked salmon and cream cheese at Black Seed bagels.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – Sleeping! Ha. I’m more of a night owl so I usually wake up around 7am and then spend the morning getting ready for work, having a cup of tea and sometimes doing one of those quick 7-minute HIIT workouts.
10:00 AM – I’ll be in the office either in a morning meeting or checking emails, structuring the priorities for the day.
12:00 PM – Favorite Lunch spot/meal? There’s a nice Italian restaurant near our office in NoMad called La Pecora Bianca that’s a great work lunch spot. They have delicious Italian chopped salads, kale salads, fresh pastas and paninis.
7:00 PM – I’ll either be at an after-work event – usually some sort of cocktail thing or launch or perhaps catching up over drinks with a publicist – or, if it’s a quieter night, heading to a Pilates class or cooking dinner at home before catching up on some TV shows.
11:00 PM – I *try* to be asleep by 11 but that’s rare …usually I’m home by now and either trying to unwind with a book or television show…and staying off my phone! (But that’s easier said than done…)
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Coffee and black tea in the morning (1-2 cups black tea when I first wake up followed by 1-2 cups coffee mid-morning) and then red wine at night (1 glass if I’m just at home or 2 if I’m out to dinner).
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
Ugh, what does it say that my most used app is probably the Apple News app?!
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
Brooklyn…I love strolling through Prospect Park or random little pockets of Brooklyn if it’s a nice day outside.
