Nomadic yoga teaching practice.
My name is Adell Bridges. I completed my Yoga Teacher Training in Dharamsala, India in May 2016 after a year of dedicated yoga practice. I came to yoga through my passion for living and promoting a healthy lifestyle and had always heard that yoga was good for the body. Through my practice I found that yoga is not only great for the body, but it nurtures a healthy mental and emotional wellbeing as well. And that’s how I became a yoga addict! With a background in gymnastics, I love being upside-down, and it plays a meaningful role in the inspiration of my yoga style. My idea of play is challenging myself in yoga, listening to my body while pushing the limits to strengthen the muscles, the brain, and the heart. Despite my strong athletic training, I passionately advocate that Yoga Is For Everyone. Every person regardless of age, body shape, physical ability, or lifestyle, can benefit from a yoga practice and I am passionate about sharing my love of yoga with everyone.
I am always looking for ways I can improve myself, whether that’s being more physically healthy, mentally present, emotionally intelligent, or spiritually connected. I keep an open mind about everything, knowing that it’s impossible to be an expert at anything. Anyone who is considered an expert in a particular area will tell you there is still more to learn. As they say, “the more you know, the more you know you don’t know” and I think that attitude keeps you grounded but also excited to keep delving deeper.
I don’t see myself as the best at anything but I do like to learn from others who inspire me or motivate me. I think this is a good way to go through life–open minded and eager to learn, just as ready to change your views or be proven wrong as you would be to defend your beliefs or habits.
On a personal level, I just want to be happy. No matter what I’m doing or where I am in life, if I’m happy then I’m succeeding! Because all the wealth and recognition and beautiful vacations in the world are worthless if you’re not happy.
On a business level, I want to help others be happy. My business is spreading happiness. Right now through yoga. Perhaps later I will help spread joy and peace in other ways.
Going to India to train to be a yoga teacher. It was the best thing I’ve ever done with my life, because since then everything in my life has been on an upward trajectory. I feel like I found my calling and it has just pulled me along on this epic adventure.
The first few weeks of being on my own as a travelling yoga teacher. I had many moments of this chest-crushing fear that I’d made a horrible mistake by giving up my comfortable life to go travel around the world really not knowing what I was doing. There were lots of those “what was I thinking?!” moments. But those times are our best teachers. I learned to trust then. Everything works out. Not knowing what’s around the corner doesn’t mean what’s ahead isn’t going to be beautiful and amazing. We float down this river of life and sometimes the water is calm and we feel in control. Other times the water is rough and we can’t see what’s ahead. But no matter what, if we just keep paddling, doing what drives us, what makes us happy, we stay afloat, and the river takes care of us.
I have a few! Here are two favourites:
when faced with a decision: “F* it” — we often place so much weight on a decision which in the grand scheme of things is really insignificant. Don’t stress it. Just make a decision and move on!
When in an uncomfortable situation: “this too shall pass” — my dad used to say this all the time. The Buddha also taught impermanence. Nothing lasts forever. If you’re not in a good place, just hang tight, it’ll pass.
My twin sister is definitely my favourite person in the universe. We are the best of friends and understand each other better than anyone else. She teaches me so much too, about life and how to be a good person. She’s really the coolest.
I have hundreds of role models. As I said before, I love to learn from others, look to others for inspiration and guidance. I have to give a shoutout though to one person who has been particularly influential in my life and that is Dylan Werner. He’s extraordinary.
I honestly can’t answer this! I love everywhere I’ve been in the world for different reasons. But India and Bali definitely have something magical about them and I’m always excited to return there.
Well like most people these days I wouldn’t want to live without my phone! Because I travel constantly and live out of my suitcase, I am very picky about what I buy and my suitcase is mostly my Alo yoga gear, my Liforme yoga mat, and a few other necessary bits. But my phone holds some of my most valued possessions: my photos, access to my favourite podcasts (Yoga Revealed and Rich Roll are my top faves), my Kindle app with the many books I’m reading, and all those wonderful apps that connect me to others! Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Facebook, Cody, YouTube, etc.
Since I was about 18 I’ve been interested in nutrition and how our diet and what we choose to fuel our bodies with affect our overall wellbeing.
I’m also always always always working on something new just to keep me focused in my yoga practice — right now it’s pressing to handstand in a pike position (legs straight and together). It’s my current nemesis/passion! It’s even more so a challenge because I’m slowly healing an old shoulder injury so I have to be extra careful with how hard I push myself, but this is all part of the overall practice.
