BRINGING I.O.T TO AGRICULTURE
“I.o.T represents a democratising of computer hardware – opening up huge scope for innovation. We find ourselves at the beginning of a new revolution. As a farmer and software engineer, my goal is to work towards developing solutions that improve on current ways of doing things – both in terms of their productivity; and their environmental effect.”
The only thing that most of us can do “best” is to simply to be ourselves. We are the only people who can be ourselves so will naturally be the best person to do this!
I’m a software engineer. I’m certainly not the best. But I’m one of the most stubborn.
Personal: My Personal aspirations are simple. To live with integrity; and to have as few regrets when I leave this place as possible. (Which of course being a dad now means seeing my children prosper emotionally and financially)
Last year I had a battle with Cancer – I was diagnosed with stage 4 Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. After a nasty period undergoing chemo they have given me an all clear! But what I will always remember is that when you are facing a possible end, the things you have left are your memories. Try to make sure they are good ones.
There are so many quotes and metaphors that I keep at bay for the right occasion (including of course many from Mark Twain and Henry Thoreau), but one of my favourites is the classic from Eleanor Roosevelt: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Here are a few of mine:
My wife and children. Who could ask for more.
Bill Evans for giving us such introspectively beautiful jazz piano
Pat Metheny for reaching rare levels of spirituality with his guitar playing
Elon Musk for being a real day engineering and business super hero and model
Steve Jobs for his vision of the Mac and Apple
Lee Quan Yew for showing us that political leadership can make a change for the better
John Law for showing what can be done with smarts and chutzpah (although the ending wasn’t that great!)
Tyler Durden – although fictional, we are all Tyler Durden now. Stay strong.
Ross Clark Jones for charging where lesser mortals fear to tread.
Surfing 6’ Lennox Head – Australia at low tide in mid winter with only a handful of guys out.
My Macbook Air
The Colin Archer
And I haven’t got one yet, but I’m excited by Elon Musk’s Powerwall!
The electric weed killer ( which as far as I know is yet to be produced!)
The world is facing challenging times. I urge the quiet engineers and farmers; the men and women of peace to stand strong together through this and help realise a better world for tomorrow.
How will you stay the best?
One of life’s greatest challenges is how to be the “best” version of yourself. And that implies a lifetime of trying; of learning from failure; and graciously accepting the disappointments that come when you let yourself down.
What fascinates you?
The look of awe in children’s eyes as their brains make new connections.
