Chairman, Felix & Paul Studios & Serial Entrepreneur
Anil Pereira is a veteran high technology executive and entrepreneur based in Silicon Valley, California. Anil serves as Chairman of the Board of Felix & Paul Studios and as a senior advisor to a number of high-growth startups, enterprises and government entities around the world. He has significant experience in marketing, new product development, corporate development and startup financing and governance. In addition to holding senior operating roles at leading companies including VeriSign, American Express and Classmates.com, Anil founded two venture-backed companies of his own—Verious and SecondSpace. He has advised over 25 startups and public companies , has served on 10 private company boards over the past 15 years, and is the author and holder of United States Patent 9,292,842, Systems and Methods for Managing Software Licensing Agreements.
I am a 25 year marketing veteran with deep experience across both startups and large companies with a focus on launching new products, developing highly trusted global brands and building scalable revenue machines. I previously served as a Vice President at American Express (DRTV, New Products); EVP & GM at VeriSign (Corporate Marketing, Enterprise Services, IPO Lead); SVP at Classmates.com (New Products, International, IPO Lead); and also founded two companies of my own—SecondSpace (Acquired by NASDAQ:CSGP) and Verious (TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield Finalist).
I currently serve as Chairman of the Board of Felix & Paul Studios (Immersive Entertainment = VR/AR/MR) and “Virtual CMO” to a number of B2C, B2B, and B2B2C startups from seed to late stage across a range of industries.
I look for founders, teams and companies that are tackling large, untapped markets, who have a strong sense of business ethics and shared values and situations where I can add “10X value” by being a part of their extended teams. I am proud of the fact that many of these relationships continue for years and several of them have spanned multiple companies by the same founders.
After spending 25+ years as an operating executive, I decided to lend my marketing skills and expertise to a range of startups and entrepreneurs who are passionate about building high growth businesses across various industries. This allows me to work with newer (mostly first-time) founders and CEOs who could perhaps learn from my battle scars and mistakes and the pattern recognition that comes with decades of being in the marketing trenches.
It is no secret that immersive experiences will revolutionize a number of industries including entertainment and B2B services. We have only started to see the impact of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality on consumer entertainment, gaming and B2B2C applications.
I motivate others through analogues, storytelling from my past business chapters and by demonstrating a hard work ethic through example.
The biggest piece of career advice I give to others is to stick with something for more than just a couple of years. I spent 7 and 6 years, respectively, at my first 2 professional jobs after business school and that allowed me to gain depth and expertise and move up the ladder within the same company.
My aspiration is the same as it has been since I was a kid: to win a Stanley Cup! Although now I may have to settle for winning the “Cup” in my local rec hockey league or being a member of the winning side during the annual San Jose Sharks Alumni Foundation Fantasy Camp!
Helping build VeriSign from a small, early stage company to a large infrastructure player which is still thriving today.
Our family motto (borrowed from the Royal Air Force) is “Per Ardua ad Astra” (Through hard work we shall reach the stars).
Work on things that add value to society and have fun along the way.
Every business challenge or opportunity can be explained through simple personal analogies.
Help people without expecting anything in return.
Inspire others and be inspired by others.
Inject humor and personal anecdotes into meetings and conversations. A little humor goes a long way to making work far more enjoyable for everyone on the team, and exposing your personal interests to others makes them more likely to want to do business with you.
My Pic of the Day: Keeping up with the latest industry trends (in this case, demo’ing the new Oculus Quest VR headset at the OC5 conference) & Keeping active and enjoying the great outdoors.
A Day in My Life:
What do you love most about Your City?
San Carlos, California—aptly named “The City of Good Living”—a small town feel with perfect weather (74 degrees and sunny most of the year) and exactly half way between San Jose and San Francisco. In the heart of Silicon Valley but definitely more down to earth than some of the fancier enclaves on the peninsula. I love the fact that both my home and office are in San Carlos and my pool and hockey rink are just a few miles away!
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
California Benedict at Stacks’ in Redwood City, sauce on the side, of course.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – sleeping
10:00 AM – answering email and joining video conferences with one of the several companies I advise.
12:00 PM – playing pickup hockey at Ice Oasis rink in Redwood City and then re-fueling afterwards with high protein leftovers for lunch.
7:00 PM – dinner with my wife, probably with a nice glass of wine.
11:00 PM – finishing off the latest show we are serially watching on Netflix or Xfinity.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Start: Half a cup of coffee diluted with unsweetened almond milk and CoffeeMate Vanilla creamer
End: Good wine, sometimes white, always red.
