AWARD WINNING WRITER, DIRECTOR & ACTRESS
Christina Beck began her career as a punk rock teenager acting in such cult films as Suburbia, Boys next door and Dudes all directed by Penelope Spheeris. She then went on to New York City and studied at Playwright’s Horizons forming an all-female theatre co. POW (Power of Women) productions. After writing, directing and acting in numerous Los Angeles theatre productions Christina wrote and starred in her first short film, Disco Man. Then went on to make the black and white noir comedy, Blow Me, which screened in The New York underground, The Chicago underground and The Seattle underground film festivals.
Christina was one of the few women accepted into Fox Searchlight’s new director’s program, Search lab where she directed, wrote and starred in the short film version of her feature film script, Slice. Slice the feature screenplay now titled, PERFECTION was one of five contenders for the IFP Best screenplay award and the project was a part of the IFP market, selected for the IFP rough cut labs in New York, winner of The Adrienne Shelly female directing grant and chosen to be IFP’s “Spotlight Screening” of the year sponsored by Time Warner and SAG indie. Upcoming projects include, EXPECTING GRACE a dark romantic comedy set in Marseilles France and HOOKER #2 a short also starring Bernard Rose and Jonathan Brugh. Christina has sat on the juries for The Feminist film festival, London, The USA film festival, Dallas and The South Eastern European film festival.
I am a storyteller. Since I was a little girl I’ve been putting on shows, performing and getting others involved in my projects. I love writing, directing and acting! My first professional experience doing all three was in Fox Searchlight’s new director’s program and I’ve never looked back. That’s not to say it’s been an easy road or a straight line but feeling purposeful is key for me and having the opportunity to do all three fulfills my entire vision.
Never give up. My vision is strong so I just keep following the light.
To be open and available to all possibilities while I continue to write and direct stories about flawed and fabulous people that long for connection and find their voice through love and compassion.
Making my debut feature film, PERFECTION felt like a major hurtle however, success for me cannot come from outside stuff. My personal success is to fully love others and myself deeply and trust in life!
Post-production for Perfection was rough. We had no money and I found myself walking the streets of Hollywood with hard drives in my arms fearing the film would never get finished. Also, both of my parents passed away shortly after that time and I had to grow up emotionally in a way I never had before.
It ain’t over until it’s over (clearly I did not make that up) and if the good part hasn’t happened yet then it’s not over. Marianne Williamson
There are so many….
Penelope Spheeris was the first female director I worked with as a teenager and continues to be a HUGE inspiration as well as Joan Darling my acting coach. I’ve recently spent time teaching screenwriting, directing and acting to some brave and talented students who inspire me when they connect to the work.
I wrote a screenplay set in Marseilles France, EXPECTING GRACE and I will happily be there for the better part of this year. I also love the UK especially the countryside warms my heart and feels like home.
I LOVE Chocolate! Always have, always will.
I do enjoy teaching and any opportunity to support others to fulfill their dreams. My life keeps unfolding in amazing ways and being of service feels purposeful to me.
