Founder, Forme Barre Fitness
Dr. Schwefel has a longstanding interest in fitness methods that strengthen and lengthen the spine, improve posture, and tone and sculpt hard to change areas of the body. She is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT200) and Certified in Mat Pilates which she taught for many years in New York City in boutique studios and large health clubs. Neither format on its own quite worked for her teaching and training style, so Christina developed her own group fitness concept which merged power yoga, mat Pilates and strength training until she found barre fitness.
Christina was drawn to barre fitness classes because of their focus on technique and inclusion of isometrics and weight training. However, she struggled with the flat back/round back portion of abdominal work due to a history of scoliosis and a weak core. In 2011, Christina was recruited to teach at Go Figure, a first generation boutique barre fitness studio steeped in the tradition and influence of Lotte Berk but without a round back/flat back section. She was instantly inspired by the rigor and intensity of the Method and amazed and motivated by the way it transformed clients’ bodies.
In 2013, Christina opened her first Go Figure studio on Nantucket Island, where she has also launched a mobile barre studio (the Barre Bus) which is a fully patented concept. In 2016, Christina acquired 5 additional studios and the intellectual property associated with Go Figure. Since that time, she has set out on an ambitious rebranding plan to re-develop the Figure Method to strengthen its connection to classical ballet technique with a renewed focus on postural alignment. The new name, Forme Barre Fitness, was launched in 2018 to reflect the company’s emphasis on alignment and form. The company has an extensive training and continuing education program for its instructors that is unlike any in the field of barre fitness. Christina regularly consults with physical therapists, classical ballet trainers, and academics to better understand biomechanics; she brings these understandings to her teaching style which is intense, informed and always evolving.
Forme is set to open a pop up in Norwalk, CT (January 2019) and a new store in Chestnut Hill, MA (May 2019) and hopes to bring several first to market consumer products related to their method to the marketplace in the coming year. Christina holds a Masters in Gender Studies from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University where she actively teaches and publishes.
