FOUNDING MANAGING PARTNER, FINN PARTNERS
What do you love most about Your City?
First, having been born and raised in NYC, I am very spoiled that I live in a city that never sleeps! There’s an energy that is always present and if you are a native New Yorker, there’s a spirit and resilience that’s just in your bones.
On a grander scale, New York City is just a small part of the immense State of New York! I love exploring Adirondack Park, especially in the fall when we experience the most gorgeous Fall foliage. It’s an outdoor lovers paradise with tremendous colors only found in nature. There’s lots of hiking, kayaking, and you can even treat yourself to a craft beer from Blue Line Brewery in their tasting room that is a renovated car wash.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
As a citizen of the world, I am very fortunate that I get to travel to Jamaica on business. I like to start my day with Jamaica’s world famous Blue Mountain coffee, and the national dish of Ackee and Saltfish. If I am craving a taste of the islands in New York City, I can easily take a cab to Miss Lily’s. They have authentic Jamaican cuisine with great reggae playing in the background.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – Answering emails from my colleagues in Asia and Europe as I get ready to head out to catch my 6:50 bus.
10:00 AM – Meeting with my senior staff to review upcoming events + client deliverables to make certain they have whatever support they need to amaze our clients every day.
12:00 PM – Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?
If I’m in Turkey on a business trip, one of my favorite places to have a high-level power lunch is the Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul. This five-star hotel is a former Ottoman palace and their signature restaurant overlooks the Bosporus and has impeccable food and service. It’s breathtaking – and you will be alert for hours after having Turkish coffee.
7:00 PM – On Mondays I’m conducting my class on Public Relations Specialties in the Masters program at New York University in the School of Professional Studies. Other evenings are taken up with Client events, Board meetings and mentoring promising young professionals seeking career advice.
11:00 PM – Catching up on emails, WhatsApp messages and reviewing other digital platforms that I don’t have time for during the busy work day.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Definitely I like one cup of hot coffee in the morning that I brew at home… JAMAICA Blue Mountain of course. At the end of the day it varies from a cup of Chinese Ginger tea to a glass of Port on occasion. If I go out, my drink of choice is one Green Apple Martini.
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
Beautiful Destinations (@beautifuldestinations) has a great mission of having a positive impact on the world and curates stunning shots that are sure to induce wanderlust.
What should everyone try at least once?
Flying in Business Class with Air France. At the lounge, you can enjoy a complimentary Clarins spa treatment and on board they have meals created by Michelin Star chefs including Guy Martin and Regis Marcon. Also, the Champagne will help make any flight a luxurious experience.
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
Turkey is a fascinating country – the hospitality is second to none, there’s amazing culture and food and so many distinct destinations. You can get lost in a maze of thousands of shops at Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar or feel like you’re on the moon when you visit Cappadocia, not to mention the scores of UNESCO and cultural sites where you can go back in time.
Gail’s Career Advice Tips:
I. “Be an instigator and an agent of change. “Upset the apple cart.” Propose new ways of doing things, new ways of solving old problems. Be the one to ask “what if…”
II. “Be involved and approachable. Ask yourself: “What can I do with my co-workers and industry colleagues?” Think outside of the org chart, specialty area or discipline, to leverage the power of integration and collaboration in your work.
III.“Be industrious.” Pick a specialty area or sector and become an expert in that area. Be the “go to” person for all things related to your industry. Never stop trying to learn more. Industries change…don’t get left behind. Keep up with the trends. Be a visionary.
IV. “Be indispensable.” Ask yourself what can you do for others? Be helpful and part of the solution. “Actions speak louder than words.”
V. “Be indivisible.” Consistency in brand “you” is crucial. Each one of us has our own brand and it’s important to treat it responsibly and with care. Everything we do represents our personal brand and our actions or inactions will either strengthen it or dilute it. Like any brand, it may need a refresh from time to time. Don’t be afraid of change or to learn something new.
