General Manager, Knai Bang Chatt
John Black is the General Manager of Knai Bang Chatt a barefoot luxury resort located in Kep on the south coast of Cambodia. Since joining and under John’s leadership Knai Bang Chatt has successfully twice been awarded gold certification in the Green Growth 2050 sustainability label and is the only hotel / resort in Cambodia to be internationally certified sustainable. Knai Bang Chatt continues to receive accolades and awards as leading resort / hotel in Cambodia. John has a profound passion for making a difference, positively impacting the lives and communities that surround him.
Before leading the team at Kani Bang Chatt John was the Country Manager for an Australian owned tour operator based in Phnom Penh where he fell in love with the culture and people of Cambodia, a country John now calls home. Outside of work John loves to cook and spend long dinners with family, friends and colleagues sharing and discussing the joys of life and celebrating how wonderful it is to be alive.

A Day in My Life:
What do you love most about Your City?
I don’t actually live in a city as such but a small provincial town on the South Coast of Cambodia called Kep. What I love most about Kep is the beautiful National Park, I feel so blessed to have this at my doorstep.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
My favourite breakfast would have to be Khmer noodle soup with chicken, it has all you need for a great start to the day. My favourite restaurant is a small Japanese restaurant in the city of Phnom Penh called Katanashi.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – waking up and trying not to hit the snooze button
10:00 AM – The most important hour of my day. This is when I meet with my management team for a daily operations brief. It is a very structured meeting and it ensures that we making right when things are not right and that we are creating memories of a lifetime for our guests.
12:00 PM – Favorite Lunch spot/meal?
Grilled Fish or chicken with roast pumpkin and salad. Made at The Strand restaurant at the resort.
7:00 PM – I am often still at work ensuring that our busy restaurants and bars are all operating smoothly, this is usually the time that I am eating dinner.
11:00 PM – rarely am I awake still but if I am it means I am head deep into a new book that I can’t put down or addicted to a show on Netflix.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
I start each day with a squeezed lemon or lime in a glass of water. I usually will have two glasses of coffee with breakfast. During the day I may have a pot of green tea that I top with water or just water. Occasionally I will finish my day with a glass or two of red wine.

Facebook is my favourite social media platform and I use messenger to communicate with friends and family
What should everyone try at least once?
Fried tarantula’s, they are a local delicacy in Cambodia.
