Founder, First Wind Cycling and Fitness
Karen Hill Meyer owns a boutique fitness studio in Charlotte, NC and uses her past to inspire, motivate, and create an inclusive community for fitness goers of all levels.
Karen founded in 2015 and is no stranger to adversity. At age 25, Karen was rushed to the hospital when she found her heart beating out of control. Doctors had to stop her heart so that the rhythm could be corrected and after undergoing a procedure to correct the congenital defect that was found in heart, she continued to have problems and was sent back to the cardiologist. Doctors found that Karen suffered from yet another medical condition affecting her heart and she was put on various medications to control her symptoms. After a lifetime of trouble with physical fitness because of her heart health, the medications and the corrective procedure allowed her to finally find her “first wind” in fitness.
In 2015, Karen took her new life passion to the next level by opening First Wind Cycling & Fitness to help others discover their first winds, too. She aims to inspire her clients to fully integrate fitness into their lifestyles to keep themselves happy and healthy. In addition to the studio, Karen has a full-time career in finance and occasionally offers donation-based rides at the studio that give back to several heart disease focused foundations.
My Pics of the Day:
This is me and my studio manager, Lyn, in front of the Confetti Hearts Wall painted by one of our clients in Charlotte. The wall has gained so much popularity for its beauty and positive message and we couldn’t be happy for one of our clients who we love so much!
I got married in September of last year to the love of my life in Savannah, GA the weekend Hurricane Florence hit the east coast. It was pure chaos, but we were able to hold everything together and have a beautiful day supporting each other as we always do, despite everything that didn’t go quite right.
My Goal of the Day: To inspire someone new to live healthy.
My Thought of the Day: Everyone has the strength to get through what they’re going through.
My Action of the Day: Smiling through the bumps.
My Deed of the Day: Helping someone without them asking.
My Tip of the Day: Breathe.
A Day in My Life:
What do you love most about Your City?
The growing diversity and the drive and commitment of everyone I meet.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
Terrace Café – Eggs over medium and shredded hash browns with a half sweet/half unsweet iced tea. The hash browns have to be shredded!
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – Wide awake, at the studio, and getting ready to teach the first workout class of the day before I do my own workout and head to the office.
10:00 AM – At my full-time job in finance sitting at my desk working and sipping on a cup of black tea.
12:00 PM – Walking to grab a quick lunch. Usually, it’s a salad from Crisp or something from Whole Foods.
7:00 PM – Spending time at home with my husband, my dog, and my cat watching one of our shows and working on First Wind Cycling & Fitness things that have come up during the day.
11:00 PM – I’m definitely asleep! I hit my pillow every night by 10:15PM.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Water, water, and more water! I drink lots of water (I don’t even know how much… It’s just a constant flow) and a few cups of plain black tea or green tea during the day depending on if I need the caffeine.
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
Could be a tie between Instagram and Pinterest… I love seeing what everyone is up to in my industry and in my life and I love perusing Pinterest for what fun projects I can mess up at home. 🙂
I’m not sure I have a favorite Instagram account. I really need them all to see what’s going on in my city, my industry, my friends’ and family’s lives, and just for a good laugh.
What should everyone try at least once?
Getting outside of their comfort zone with an activity they don’t think they can do. Could be a workout, a class, an event, or anything! I didn’t do group fitness classes for a long time because I was scared. I am still scared of some of them, but going to that first class eventually changed my life and now, I love teaching those classes that I almost never experienced. As the saying goes, you never know until you try… Why miss out?
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
In a really good book! I love biographies about people I admire and I also love reading books totally unrelated to what I do every day. Books give me whatever I am looking for whenever I’m looking for it. They make everything better.
