CEO, Blackthorn Media
Hello, my name is Larry W. Jones and after 25+ years working as the president of a major cable network for Viacom, I have jumped into the new realities of creating VR & AR content for the next generation of high tech entertainment platforms. The future of scalable immersive storytelling on cutting edge mobile devices is only a few years away and I want to be in on the ground floor when it takes off. The work I am doing embraces artificial intelligence, machine learning and every aspect of all the new technologies that are coming to fruition in the entertainment business including volumetric capture and lightfields. The future of storytelling will be unlike anything we have ever experienced in our past and it will be revolutionary.
My Daily Thoughts:
Goal of the Day: Keep the visual of the future very clear in my minds eye.
Thought of the Day: THIS will be the day I have a breakthrough.
Action of the Day: Make progress no matter how small.
Tip of the Day: Ask myself: “How will this help people have a better day?”
A Day in My Life:
What do you love about your city?
I live between NYC and LA and I LOVE both cities for very different reasons. In New York, I love the energy that is everywhere around you, inside and outside. In Los Angeles, I love the creativity … everyone seems to be working on multiple entrepreneurial projects simultaneously.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
My favorite restaurant in NYC is Donahue’s Steak House (Sheppard’s Pie) on the Upper East Side and Sushi Park (Chef’s Choice) in West Hollywood.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – Sound asleep … I stay up late (1AM)
10:00 AM – At my desk answering emails.
12:00 PM – Il Pastaio (Beverly Hills)
7:00 PM – Dinner
11:00 PM – Watching the Daily Show, then Stephen Colbert
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Lots of water!
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
Google / Larrywjonestoo (mine)
What should everyone try at least once?
Dinner with an artist … alone.
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
My Native AdVice:
How did you get into the industry?
I wanted to make content and tell stories. I love the idea of giving people the opportunity to escape the pressures of the day even if for a short period of time.
Career advice to those in your industry?
Always always always remain CURIOUS. Ask every question that comes into your head, but not necessarily in that moment … find the right time and get your questions answered. I have no fear of asking what might be considered a “dumb question”, and that freedom has allowed me to gain great knowledge … from OTHERS.
Any emerging industry trends?
The collision of Silicon Valley and Hollywood is happening and it’s just the beginning. The expertise that is endemic to both towns is sorely needed by the other. There will be great opportunities for those who can navigate both spaces and bridge the gap.
Ideal experience for a customer/client?
Truly feeling a story like never before where the user can be a part of the interaction itself.
How do you motivate others?
Make everyone feel like the company is THEIRS and that the decisions they make help us learn / make mistakes and become successful. Eliminate their fear so they can make decisions.
My Native AdVantage:
What are my aspirations?
Build a financially successful business from scratch that gives back to its employees and the community. Set up college scholarships for kids who need financial assistance.
My Biggest Success?
Beyond my kids and family … I lead a team that built an entertainment brand that will be around for decades to come.
My Most Challenging Moment?
Keeping it together in front of a staff of 600+ people after being let go hours before.
Always be curious.
My Favorite People/Role Models?
Old folks who are 85+ who truly speak their minds that give unfiltered advice with passion. I find that folks who are near the end of their time here are earth speak with great clarity on what one should do / worry about, and usually it’s never what we are actually worrying about.
What Else to Know?
Meet as many people as you possibly can in every avenue you are even slightly interested in … you never know where that path may lead!
