Career Snapshot:

Raised by a painter mother and an architect father, the Nuesch Sisters grew up in an ever changing creative environment. They began to make films at a very young age and later on moved to Los Angeles to study directing and writing at Art Center College of Design. Their passion for detailed art direction and wardrobe is present in all their films as well as their interest in human connection or the absence of it.

In 2016, they started their own Production Company called Nüesch Sisters Productions in Los Angeles. Their fashion film Moon Girls was selected by various international film festivals and premiered on Nick Knight’s fashion website SHOWstudio. Their latest short film Forget Me Not won silver at the Young Director Award at Cannes and was selected by numerous international film festivals including the LA Shorts Festival and the Holly Shorts Film Festival. Currently they are working on multiple projects including their first feature film. For their commercial work, they are represented by ANORAK.

What Else To Know

My Goal of the Day:

Be focused and work well as a team.

My Thought of the Day:

Patriarchy traumatizes not only women, but also men.

My Action of the Day:

Make an effort to live sustainably, healthy and open-minded.

My Deed of the Day:

So much food is thrown away. We live close to Skid Row in Downtown Los Angeles and we see the poverty everyday, which is why we make an effort to never waste food and share it with those who need it instead.

My Tip of the Day:

Allow some time for silliness and dancing.

Tell Us More:

What do you love most about Your City?

We grew up in St. Gallen in the East of Switzerland, but spend most of the year in Los Angeles. We consider both our home cities and we love them for very different reasons. St. Gallen is a city built in a valley around an old monastery. It’s picturesque, idyllic and during Christmas time the most magical place we know. It’s where family and old friends live and it will always be home. Los Angeles, on the other hand, is diverse, action-packed and always sunny. We love the endless choices of international food, the ocean and being in the Mecca of filmmaking.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

When we were younger, we never liked to eat breakfast. Now we can’t imagine going a day without it. We live together with Florine’s boyfriend, who is very talented and inventive in the kitchen. We like to change up what we eat, but the ritual entails good bread, freshly brewed coffee and watching the German, Swiss or American news.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Sleeping. Unless, we are shooting early in the morning to catch the golden hour light.

10:00 AM – We usually start our days rather late and work longer in the evening, so at 10 AM we have exercised, had breakfast and just checked our emails. Now we begin to work on the current project. At the moment, that means we are writing on our feature script.

12:00 PM – Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

We don’t have lunch at 12:00 PM, but more around 2:00 PM. Most of the time, we prepare a salad at home and try to keep our heads in our story. When we go out for lunch, we like to get sushi. KazuNori’s hand rolls are delicious and definitely worth trying.

7:00 PM – We are usually still working at 7:00 PM, but around 8:00 PM we make dinner. Good food is really important to us, so we cook a lot of different recipes, using fresh and high quality ingredients. While we cook, we listen to music and depending on the mood we are in, we all sing along or dance around the kitchen.

11:00 PM – It’s really hard to keep up with all the films that are coming out and there are so many older films that we still need to watch. We have a list of classics that we are working our way through, so most nights we would either be watching one of those films or we would be reading.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Tea. Lots and lots of tea and of course the cup of coffee in the morning.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Mhh… We each have an app that we are into. Florine is using ChineseSkill to learn Chinese in the hopes to understand our two half siblings, who live in Hong Kong and are half-Chinese, when they are speaking Chinese (they also speak Swiss-German and English). Kim is a huge Shakespeare fan and therefore has an app that’s called Shakespeare, which contains all of his plays, sonnets and poems as well as gives you push notifications with Shakespeare quotes (nerdy, we know).
As for Instagram Accounts we like: historycoolkids, historyphotographed, freethebid, radicalfires, odeandiefreude and ignant.

What should everyone try at least once?

Karaoke and going to Disneyland as an adult, but enjoying it as if you were a child.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

At the Last Bookstore in Downtown LA and looking at old family videos.
