Founder & CEO, Kindur
I’m Rhian, founder and CEO of Kindur. We’re building a platform for modern retirees. For the last decade I spoke to my parents about ‘when’ they could retire…. And then two years ago when the time was right I realized how complex the set of decisions were that they needed to make. I founded Kindur to help simplify decisions like social security, Medicare, saving and spending in retirement. Before Kindur I spent 17 years at JP Morgan, most recently as a Managing Director in the asset management business. I’ve been able to leverage this background as we build our retirement advice engine.
Empower baby boomers to retire fearlessly
Excited by the results from our recent Facebook tests. We’ve struck a cord with our customers!
Making lots of decisions with my team. Getting our team one day closer to launch this February!
Reprioritizing our build. We’re building in a highly regulated market and have a heavy lift to solve our customers’ problems. There are so many considerations for us to weigh at each step of the process and our team is laser-focused on getting it right.
Listen carefully to your users. We’ve invested in user research and testing from the early days and these customer insights have been incredibly insightful in both clarifying the problem we are trying to solve and prioritizing what we need to do to develop the most intuitive financial platform for those in or nearing retirement.
My Pic of the Day: We recently moved into a new office. We have two conference rooms named Pickleball and Mah Jongg. One of the things that our users are telling us is how much they enjoy trying new activities in retirement. Pickleball and Mah Jongg seem to be growing in popularity so we thought, why not?
A Day in My Life:
What do you love most about Your City?
I’ve lived in New York and London for the last twenty years. I’m currently in New York and love the ying and yang of the fast-paced downtown and the UWS community where we run into friends and schoolmates as we run errands and walk the neighborhood.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
I love a full English but in NYC you can’t go wrong starting the day at Balthazar. It’s always a classic.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – Fast asleep. My mornings usually start closer to 7 with a quick trip to the gym and then I drop my kids off at school. I love those few moments in the morning of one-on-one timebefore I drop them off.
10:00 AM –Prepping for the day and our company wide stand up. We review key decisions made/ to be made and check in on our objectives and key results (OKRs). We’re making good progress on our OKR #2: Kindur empowers retirees to automate retirement.
12:00 PM – Favorite Lunch spot/meal?
We just moved into our new office and I’m bringing my lunch more (New Years resolution!). On Fridays my CTO and I always have our one–on–one where we prioritize key builds and discuss outcomes from recent user testing.
7:00 PM – I’m dashing to the subway to catch the kids (4 & 6) before bedtime. We like to do stories and perhaps some LEGO building. Post bedtime it’s dinner with my husband and time to catch up on emails and plan the next day.
11:00 PM – Fast asleep. I’m an 8 hours of sleep kind of gal.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Lattes are my go to. I’m trying to keep it to one a day but sometimes I need a boost in the afternoon. When I was first raising capital, I had so many coffee meetings that I was on caffeine overload!
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
I’m partial to CN Traveller and Architectural Digest. Always looking for inspiration for my next vacation or renovation! When I’m traveling for work I like Hotel Tonight for last minute bookings and Bloomberg to keep abreast of the markets.
What should everyone try at least once?
User research. It’s amazing what you learn when you dedicate time to listen to your customer. Every new hire at Kindur joins us for user testing during onboarding. It’s the best way to show the impact of what we are building. In fact, for anyone who works on a consumer product, you’ll probably want to try this a lot more than once.
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
We go to Amagansett most weekends. During the summer my Saturday starts at our CSA Amber Waves Farm. Out there picking flowers and fresh veggies we are worlds away from the weekday hustle.
