My fourth-grade teacher awarded me the superlative of “Most Curious” in front of the whole school. At the time, I wasn’t sure if it was a compliment or her annoyance at my endless stream of questions. Either way, it hasn’t been a trait that eased with time. If anything, my fascination with the world around me has only increased with each passing year. Perhaps, that is what led me to start my own company, Zen Media, at the age of 22, and allowed me to turn it into a globally renowned name in the world of marketing. Or, perhaps, it is why I chose to write my graduate thesis on a small network called Twitter which only had 2,000 users at the time. That same “curious itch” is what has motivated me to write two best-selling books and to share my constant knowledge and passion with the world in the form of my columns and books and tv shows. My biggest aspiration is to help brands and individuals thrive in the digital age, and my biggest concern is that perhaps we as a society will fall victim to technology rather than truly be empowered by it.
I wrote my graduate thesis on Twitter…when it had 2,000 users. It was VERY early days for social media and digital marketing at large. In fact, it was so new that there were no jobs in the industry. The “industry” barely existed so I started my own company, Zen Media, right out of school. I wrote one of the first books on the topic, The Zen of Social Media Marketing, which is now in its 4th edition and used by college campuses around the world to teach the subject.
The rise of the connected consumer. This goes beyond just demographics such as millennials and Gen Z…this is about what the modern day consumer expects and how brands can stay relevant and competitive by understanding and meeting those expectations.
We are lucky enough to work with some of the best brands and leaders around. One of our clients, Chase Business, came to us wanting to better serve their customers. They had surveyed their customer and found that one of the top requests/needs was for marketing and tech know-how. We helped launch the Chase BizMobile, a mobile on 4 wheels, which has been traveling around the country helping small business owners with exactly what they asked for, and our team of experts from Zen Media has been on board (literally) helping Chase Business customers with their marketing and tech questions. It’s been one of those true “win-win-win” examples where everyone has benefited. That’s the sweet spot of our work: creating those triple wins – for the client, their customers/prospects, and our internal team.
