I got into the industry by mistake! It all started as a simple hobby of blogging about my own weight loss and I started gaining traffic and readers by the day. I would share photos of my progress and meals I’d prepared that eventually helped me to lose 45lbs. My readers started asking for training plans and I eventually got my personal training certification in order to supply that demand, and Diary of a Fit Mommy LLC was born!
An emerging trend I have been a lot lately is the popularity of online personal training. In the past, personal training was done at the gym or at one’s home. Nowadays, it is convenient for both the client and the trainer to train via Skype, email, or some other virtual way.
Although online training presents a terrific opportunity to reach a wider group of clients, it also presents a challenge as training people from afar can get tricky. When you’re not working with the client face-to-face it can be difficult to ensure that the client will implement the program. To overcome this challenge I have created a free online support group to help get more acquainted with each client. I also make sure to be easily accessible to best suit clients’ needs.
My own personal weight-loss story inspired my business. I was constantly being asked about my workout and meal plans that I was using to help me to drop the weight. Then I became pregnant with my son and started marketing myself as a fit mom by having a fit pregnancy. This lead me to also work with prenatal clients as well who would like to stay in shape throughout those tough 9 months.
I have been playing around with the idea of launching merchandise and apparel. However, I yet to take the first gigantic leap.
You have got to advertise! Some get lucky without having to do so, but that is super rare. I learned that in order to make money, you must spend a little money as well. This is something that many small businesses neglect to do and then they fail.
You mean other than paying taxes?? LOL!
My clients appreciate that my Strong Body Guide is only 12 weeks long and most generally yields outward and inward changes during this period. Also, you do not need a gym! All exercises can be done from your home or on the go-all you need is a pair of dumbbells. Each move contains a detailed description as well as step by step images which makes the program very easy to follow.
Motivation is hard to find. It all comes within so it can be really tricky to try and motivate another human being. What I suggest is that my clients make a motivational board. This includes getting a blank white poster board and a few fitness magazines. Start by cutting out images or phrases that you find motivating and glue them on! Hang that board in your room or someplace where you will see it daily to remind you to keep going.
The social media and personal training industries are tricky. I never knew that the two could combine until I stumbled onto doing so! My advice is to always stay true to yourself and your brand. Always be willing to offer free tidbits of advice to help others. You may just make a follower or customer for life that way!
