Career Snapshot:

I have had the pleasure of working in Europe, Asia Pacific and North America. I started my career in the UK working in the manufacturing industry in measuring productivity. Moved to Australia when I met my husband to start a family. It was at this stage that I changed careers studying performance psychology and practical philosophy. I subsequently became the Australian distributor for a US company who helped clients such as Google, Disney, Facebook, Kawasaki among others in building highly productive cultures through self-awareness and motivation. From here I went on to develop a culture assessment that could pinpoint why someone was dissatisfied with the company, leader and team in which they worked in order to improve employee engagement levels and reduce disgruntled employees that became a threat to a business. This product was valuable for mergers and acquisitions which is where I met my current team in London. I now work between London and Sydney Australia, and travel the world speaking on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Insider Threat.

AdMission Statement (AKA Personal Brand Pitch):

Tanya Harris is a female entrepreneur within the field of Artificial Intelligence and Insider Threat. She is on the Board of Harrman Cyber, Universal Data Protection and ICOM4, and was previous Chair of American Chamber of Commerce, Women in Leadership. Her personal mission is to help companies solve the problem of data protection and insider threat from a human motive/behavior standpoint, so that companies can start to protect their critical data from being exposed due to employee error and malicious attacks. Tanya has gained the support of Goldsmith Centre for Intelligence Data Analytics Unit and The University of Oxford Corpus Christi Psychology Unit in building an AI tool to help prevent the occurrence of insider threat.

How did you get into the industry?:

In 2015 I was lucky enough to meet some inspiration business people in London, who were ex British Intelligence and working in the security, cyber and investigation world. From here, we started to brainstorm how ‘insider threat’ could be prevented using technology, psychology and intelligence skills, this led to the creating of Harrman Cyber and our AI product called FACT360.

Emerging industry trends?:

There is certainly a rapidly growing interest in using AI to solve many business problems including cyber security, as such, we see AI being used to detect external threats to a company’s infrastructure through endpoint detection etc. but still not used effectively to prevent insider threat.

Industry opportunities and challenges?:

We can do more AI as it can help identify the growing threat of a malicious insider threat by raising the satisfaction levels of employees.

The challenge is data privacy laws under GDPR. Let me explain, the data that a company holds about their employees and clients, can be used to predict dissatisfaction that goes unnoticed to the human eye, in order intervene before it gets out of control. However, due to fear of employee backlash when using their data to predict happiness or dissatisfaction levels and bad press, many companies are not prepared to use this data which places their business at risk. And with research figures citing between 60% and 90% of cyberattacks and data breaches caused from insider threat, this is an issue that needs to be faced.

Inspiration for the business idea, and your vision for the Business?:

I am inspired by bringing something new to the market that helps both employees enjoy their work environment and business protecting their data from being lost, stolen or breached. As we currently face the issues associated with GDPR, FACT360 currently focuses on fraud investigation, as we can rapidly process historical data to identify points in time where significant changes in behaviors occurred. This triggers key events that could have been contained, prior to the fraud taking place. By proving that we can trigger events, I would hope to see FACT360 finally accepted as a preventative insider threat solution by triggering areas of concern that a company can address before the threat occurs. This has the added benefit of improving workplace cultures and employee satisfaction levels.

What's next for the Business in the near future?:

After 9 months in development, we have launched version 1 that can process multiple languages, we are now working with business and governments with proof of concepts whilst continuing to develop version 2. Version 2 promises to bring even more neat technology to investigate fraud.

Your key initiatives for the success of the Business? Greatest Accomplishment?:

We recently became part of the UK innovate R&D grant, this will allow us to extensively research opportunities for both fraud investigation and insider threat, and connects us with influential business people in the UK. The University of Oxford will join the Goldsmith Centre for Intelligence Data Analytics Unit to add additional layers of research centered around human motive and risky behaviors.

Your most difficult moment at the Business? (and what did you learn?):

Over the past three years, we have been rejected by many organizations as cyber security and data protection is still deemed to be a problem that is solved using IT. We are working on a paradigm shift of talking about the important that individuals play in security and data protection. I have constantly been challenged with setback after setback and have had to use my own belief, determination and positive mindset to make this dream become a reality.

Ideal experience for a customer/client?:

When FACT360 is used for fraud investigation, it will crunch data at the speed impossible to the human eye. On a small PC, we crunch 600,000 emails in just 2 days, this would take months when performed by humans. As we use patterns to identify change rather than sentiment, means the system can immediately be deployed without rules and can be used with multiple languages. We expedite and improve the investigation process, saving time, money and identifying communications of significance that otherwise go unnoticed to the human eye.

How do you motivate others?:

When working in a new market, challenges are constantly being thrown at us. Therefore, communication and sharing success stories is key to motivation, we hold weekly meetings and work strongly together as a team, propping each other us so that we stay focused on the goal.

Career advice to those in your industry?:

In the world of cyber and data security, not one technology company has the answer, working together is key for business and for your clients. Find valuable business partners who can complement your knowledge, skills and technology and become advocates of each others business. And most importantly, never give up.

What do you do best?:

People live with their own frame of reference, therefore when they have rejected the product, it is that person who has rejected it, not the organization that they work for. I do not let peoples’ opinions impact my motivation, I always maintain a positive can-do attitude and bounce back quickly from setbacks.

What are your aspirations? (Personal and Business):

My business goals are to see FACT360 used as an insider threat prevention tools working alongside SIEM and UBA solutions. My personal goals are to support my son through his final year of school and to look after my health through healthy organic eating with daily Pilates reformer sessions. I would like to reach the stage where I have more time to relax and travel to various retreats around the world, rather than travelling purely for work.

Biggest Success?:

Giving birth to my son.

Most Challenging Moment?:

Some are too personal to mention . So, I would say dealing with the fact that I have Osteopenia and the age of 51 and have to change my lifestyle to keep it under control.

My mother who has always inspired and supported me throughout life. My son who has a kind and loving soul. My husband for always being chilled. My two business partners: one who has faced every challenge you can think of and handled it with dignity and grace. My other partner who is full of wisdom, advice and support, making me feel that I can achieve anything that I set my sights on.

Favorite Places/Destinations?:

Vanuatu, the most relaxing place in the world. Italian Lakes, simply stunning. Scottish Highlights for fresh crisp walks and Australia for everything it has to offer.

Right now, I am enjoying my new garlic crusher and my good old Pilates reformer machine.

I have so many, being grateful is one of my passions.
