Thinkerbell represents the coming together of scientific enquiry and hardcore creativity – or as we like to call it, ‘Measured Magic’. We’re an independent Australian agency owned by four of Australia’s most well regarded communications people Jim IngramAdam FerrierMargie Reid and Ben Couzens. We also have a friend with benefits in PwC. We have extensive experience in the worlds of research and data, strategy and creative execution and we’ve helped some of Australia’s best known and most loved brands find their inner magic.

Career Snapshot:

I always wanted to be a consumer psychologist, and after getting side tracked into forensic and clinical psychology, that’s what I am. In my marketing life I’ve worked for a brand consultancy, then Saatchi & Saatchi, then co-founded Naked Communications in Australia before co-founding Thinkerbell with some friends.. We also have another thing called s p a c e.

AdMission Statement (AKA Personal Brand Pitch):

I was once described by myself as an ‘enigmatic irritation’. I wear black a lot, I’m disheveled and I cant quite shake a slight slur.

My AdVice

How did you get into the industry?:

I went to see a careers counsellor when I was 17. He asked my my interests and I said Money and people. He suggested I become a consumer psychologist. He nailed it.

Emerging industry trends?:

I find the balance between marketers wanting to understand consumers properly is really interesting, as what they should be focusing on more is how to build their brand.

Ideal experience for a customer/client?:

That’s for them to answer.

How do you motivate others?:

It’s a tough question. There are lots of way to motivate and demotivate people. Im never quite sure when I’m doing either to be perfectly honest.

Career advice to those in your industry?:

Be interesting.

What are your aspirations? (Personal and Business):

I love hanging with my family, and I love coming up with interesting ideas and things.

Biggest Success?:

Being happily married with two kids. Without fail. A close second would be being gainfully employed. I’m forever grateful that my wife loves me, and that I can earn a buck.

What do you love most about Your City?

I love my suburb, St Kilda. It’s the least judgemental suburb in the world. From hipsters, to artists, to yuppies, to bogans, they are all here mixing with the sex workers, and those without a stable home. It’s an amazing melting pot, full of character.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Breakfast is a thing of the past thanks to intermittent fasting (8 pm till noon daily). Favorite restaurant is anywhere with the family.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AMstaring at an 18 month old – most likely changing his nappy.

10:00 AM having my 4th coffee, and in a meeting.

12:00 PM – Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Seeing how long I can hang out for before I eat – normally with either jelly beans or almonds in hand.

7:00 PMPutting the 18 month old to bed.

11:00 PM Asleep (although as I write this it’s 10.44pm!

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Whiskey – ideally in a Manhattan. Just one, or maybe two, once in a while six.

Therapy. Everyone should have therapy.

I used to like talking about what makes people cool, I did my thesis on ‘the underlying constructs of cool people’. But the older and fatter I get the less credible I become on the subject.
