Career Snapshot:

Amy Hochhauser is co-founder of of JoyRide Cycling + Fitness, an indoor cycling and boutique fitness studio with 100 instructors and staffers in seven locations in Connecticut and Texas. “Good Morning America” recently called JoyRide one of the most inclusive fitness studios in America.

As a “recovering” attorney and lifelong overachiever, Amy was balancing the demands of raising young children with her desire to create a fulfilling career doing something she loved. To channel her energy, she began practicing yoga, taking indoor cycling and studying meditation. She quickly realized that these disciplines had a tremendous positive influence on her ability to manage stress and physical pain. After moving from NYC to Westport, CT in 2009, she sought a fitness community to help her continue her mindbody journey. While she found places to practice yoga, she couldn’t find a “joyful” place to take an indoor cycling class. Then it clicked: She could combine her love of fitness, belief in the power of the mind-body connection, and her passion for business into a new career. That’s how JoyRide was born!

My Native AdVantage

What do you do best?:

Hard work! I’m a lifelong overachiever. I have the ability to focus for long periods of time and tackle things that seem impossible until they are done.

Biggest Success?:

My children! Raising two happy and healthy boys (ages 15 & 12) has been the highlight of my life and by far my biggest success. Creating JoyRide and passing the NY Bar Exam are the runner’s up.

Most Challenging Moment?:

My decision to change careers and leave my job as a corporate lawyer (months before my bonus — despite having sizable student loans) was a defining and challenging moment. My friends and family thought I was insane. But I saw an opportunity to live a more fulfilling quality of life and I took the chance. I’ve never regretted it. Not for a second. Plus, the jobs I had in the years between working at a large law firm and opening JoyRide gave me the tools necessary to be a successful entrepreneur. Taking a big risk is scary…but if you trust your gut and follow your instincts, you will be rewarded.

Motto?:

I have three favorites.

  1. You are stronger than you think
  2. This too shall pass
  3. You can’t be good at everything.
Favorite People/Role Models?:

Brene Brown’s work on vulnerability and leadership inspires me daily!

Favorite Places/Destinations?:

The beach in Phuket, Thailand. I went there on my honeymoon and it is magic!

What Else To Know

Tell Us More:

Any industry opportunities or challenges?

The trend for at-home fitness presents opportunities and challenges. I believe that anything that encourages people to be fit is amazing! Additionally, anything that promotes the popularity of indoor cycling is a win for us. With that said, the more people retreat to their homes and rely on technology, the more disconnected they become from other people. Humans need connection – live and in person – to be happy. And there is truly nothing better than the shared energy created riding together in a dark room with amazing music and a motivating instructor.

What’s next for the Business in the near future?

We’re working on a national expansion plan to spread JOY to more cities and towns across the country.

Ideal experience for a customer/client?

First, to be welcomed into one of our JoyRide studios with a smile and a warm greeting by our desk staff and instructors. Second, a challenging, inspiring and motivating class. Lastly, after class, our team should reach to the customer for feedback and offer options for them to continue their workout journey with us. Overall, it’s key that the JoyRide brand culture of positivity, inclusivity and JOY is represented at every single touchpoint in the customer’s journey.

How do you motivate others?

I try to lead by example. There is no job at JoyRide that is beneath me. If the front desk is busy and needs a hand, I’m happy to hop behind the desk to roll towels or help customers. I’m certainly not as good at it as my amazing staff is…but that’s part of the fun.

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

The JoyRide Community!

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

COFFEE. One before I speak in the morning. And two more in my Yeti travel cup (keeps it hot all day) that I drink throughout the day. I know it should be water, but I know it should be water, but I’m work in progress!

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Waze! It’s a lifesaver. Although Amazon Prime Now is gaining traction. As a working mom, the ability to have Whole Foods delivered in a 2-hour time period is epic!
