What do you do best?:

Fit Body Boot Camp is all about one thing: providing our members the most convenient solution for sustainable weight loss. We measure our success by the number of people in our programs who come in sad and overweight and come out smiling and in the best shape of their lives.

What makes you the best version of yourself?:

Our Unstoppable Fitness Formula is our key to success. It’s a three-part formula where the parts all support each other.

First, there’s our nutritional guidance, where we sit down with every client and carefully tailor their meal plan so they can keep the foods they love while still eating healthy.

Second, there’s our 30 minute workouts, 3-4 times a week, where we use our unique approach to High Intensity Interval Training to create the Afterburn effect – which is when the workout supercharges your body’s metabolism so it will burn fat for up to 32 hours after the workout.

Third, there’s our motivation and accountability system, where we teach our trainers to always maintain a positive, supportive workout environment and reach out to help members who are slowing down or seem ready to give up.

What are your aspirations? (Personal and Business):

My personal aspiration is always the same – never peak! My skin crawls when I hear people have conversations that are nothing but “remember when…” or “back in the glory days…” I say, what about tomorrow? Don’t you realize that life STILL has so much more left to offer you (if you have the courage to reach for it)?

For a while now I’ve been doing 6 week challenges that are designed to push me way out of my comfort zone. Now that I’m in my 40s, I’m going straight for things that scare the poop out of me. I guess this speaks to my anxious personality, but a few years ago I would look at things like surfing and rock climbing and say “Nope. Way too risky. I’m never doing that.” Now I’ve done both. Seriously, the first time I drove through Joshua Tree to get to the rocks I kept thinking “are these roads wide enough for a fire truck?”For my next 6-week challenge, I’m meeting up with one of my Fit Body Boot Camp owners in Hawai’i, a guy named Egan Inoue. He’s scary good at jiu-jitsu. I’m a pretty big guy, but I’m pretty sure he could even snap me in half. So I’m gonna train with him with for six weeks straight.

My business aspiration is to keep on proving that the boot camp model is the best way to deliver great training on a massive scale. At Fit Body Boot Camp we have our 2020 Vision – our plan to get 20% of the world healthy by 2020 – and I’m dead serious about that. The way I look at it, if and when I actually pull that off through my power as a business builder and the training power of my franchisees, I’ll basically be the most effective personal trainer in world history. In terms of number of lives changed through fitness, I’ll hold the record.

Biggest Success?:

Quite honestly, my biggest personal success has to be my kids. I know people say that a lot, but those two are seriously incredible. They’re already so smart and well-rounded – they play all kinds of sports, they love to play guitar, and they’ve been through such a huge range of experiences. Also, they’re way more well-traveled than I was at their age. I was terrified to even board an airplane until I hit my twenties, and my family didn’t really have the money for fancy vacations.

For business, I think my biggest success is the amazing team I’ve built around me. When I first turned pro, I always felt like a lone ranger. As scrappy personal trainer charging out there and marketing myself, I could mostly get away with that. But once I started the Fit Body Boot Camp franchise I knew, obviously, that I would need a lot more people. That’s when I really discovered the power of a great team, and also realized just how many amazingly cool people there are in the world.

Right now, my team includes some of the smartest, most fun, most hard-working people I’ve ever met. Yet, if any one of them wanted to leave the company tomorrow I’d wish them luck and even make a few connections for them. I’m not scared of losing people because I know that there are so many other wonderful people I could take in, and I know we have such a strong culture that there’s no way we could ever lose our momentum forward.

Most Challenging Moment?:

I gotta tell you, I’ve been through almost every business nightmare you can imagine…which means my real answer might surprise you.

Here it is: the first time I ever spoke at a fitness business conference. What scared me most was knowing that this big crowd of fitness pros was hanging on my every word, and that they were about to go home and apply my advice in their own business. I knew that the future of all those people and all their families depended on me doing my job right…that responsibility terrified me, but I also knew I couldn’t back down from it.

Motto?:

Back when I was working a day job at Disneyland, I once had a manager tell me “Circumstance does not change responsibility.” I immediately knew he was right. There’s gotta be at least 200 times I’ve stopped and repeated this to myself.

“Exceed the client’s expectation.” That’s one of our core values, and I believe it should be a core value in every business.

Favorite People/Role Models?:

For business, it’s Jim Franco. He was originally my personal training client way back when, but I wouldn’t be the businessman I am today if it weren’t for him pulling me aside after training and telling me that I sucked at selling. He told me exactly what I needed to change in my business model and pointed me to some of the best sales teachers in the industry – people like Tom Hopkins, Tony Robins, and Brian Tracy.

Personally, it’s gotta be my dad. I like to think I’ve done some pretty courageous things in my life…but imagine being a 45-year-old man, living in Soviet Armenia, with only a modest living to your name and a wife and kids to look after. And then imagine making the decision to flee to capitalist America, knowing pretty well how Mother Russia might react to that sort of plan. I honestly can’t imagine the kind of courage that takes…but that’s exactly what my dad did. I can’t thank him enough for that.

Favorite Places/Destinations?:

See, as a foodie my first association with “places” is “restaurants.” For that, I have to go with the Addison Restaurant at the Grand Del Mar in San Diego. They do nine course dinners of absolutely delicious food.

As far as places places go, I’d have to say the island of Maui. It’s the perfect place to relax. Everything and everyone there is so chill, and the nature is stunningly beautiful.

Favorite Products/Objects?:

I love any kind of time-saving technology. It still blows me away that my MacBook has an eight hour battery life. Also, I love using my iPhone to send live pictures and messages to my family whenever I want.

Current Passions?:

Honestly, my business is my passion. Even if all I got for it was a modest paycheck I’d still be doing the same thing. You know, a Fit Body Boot Camp owner told me this great story recently: he was driving around in his car with the big FBBC logo on the side, and when he stopped at a red light the car next to him rolled honked, rolled down the window, and shouted “I lost 100 pounds with you guys! You’re the best!”

That’s my passion. Helping people turn their lives around like that is my number 1 reason for doing all this.

Oh, and there’s also playing ping pong every night with my son. That too.
