Career Snapshot:

I am the CEO and Co-founder of Legartis with the objective to make legal work faster, easier and more efficient. Being an Attorney at Law, I sensed the potential of an AI-powered contract intelligence software to alleviate and speed up repetitive legal work and allow lawyers to focus on what matters. I have gained experience as a lawyer in South Korea as well as in Switzerland and saw many different angles of legal challenges in my attorney work for various clients. As I am also an entrepreneur at heart, I co-founded a think tank on foreign policy in 2009, and currently am a member of its board. In the past 5 years, I have additionally highlighted my pioneering spirit and inventive talent as a Global Shaper and curator of the Zurich Hub, an initiative by the World Economic Forum. With Legartis, me and my team have been stirring up the legal tech startup scene since 2017.

How did you get into the industry?:

During my studies in economics and law, I got the chance to participate in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, a known moot court competition in the field of contract law and the largest moot court in the world. This is when I found my fascination but also pain points when working with contracts, which inspired me to dig deeper into that field.

Industry opportunities and challenges?:

The legal industry has long been lagging behind in regards to digitalisation and automation of processes. It was believed to be a mission impossible due to the high confidentiality standards in law and its dependence on human decision making. Artificial intelligence has finally gained enough trust from people to be dealing with these issues and making legal work easier, more reliable and efficient.

Inspiration for the business idea, and your vision for the Business?:

In my former work as a lawyer, I often had to browse through extensive dossiers to find specific pieces of information. Repeatedly, the search turned out to be tedious and highly time-consuming. I often questioned myself whether there was no better way to perform this kind of task. When I was contacted by an accelerator in Switzerland, I knew what I had to do. After a deep market research and finding the right partners, the foundation stone for Legartis was laid.

What's next for the Business in the near future?:

Our main focus at the moment is to GROW.

We aim to acquire many more customers this year to make their legal work easier, faster and more efficient. Getting more clients to work with the Legartis Contract Intelligence tool also means that more contractual data is processed. This makes the artificial intelligence smarter and we can tailor our product even better to the needs of our customers.

Your key initiatives for the success of the Business? Greatest Accomplishment?:

The main challenge of a startup is to really understand the needs of the client. Our key to solve this was to work together with clients from the very beginning and develop a solution to relevant and recurring problems in the industry. Getting feedback already during the development phase has always been very valuable for us to improve the product.

Ideal experience for a customer/client?:

Legal documents contain extensive amounts of valuable information which is typically stored in a passive and unstructured way. Hence, responsible employees lack reliable and fast access to the relevant facts. Legartis’ AI-based Contract Intelligence solution makes the analysis of legal document simple and convenient. The Legartis’ SaaS-solution enables companies to identify, classify and understand contracts within seconds, pulling up-to-date data any time. By identifying problematic and unusual wording as well as missing provisions, it enables its users to manage and process large volumes of documents and information in a user-friendly, continuously updated and highly efficient manner. Legal document analysis and management have never been this fast and efficient!

How do you motivate others?:

From my experience as co-founder of Foraus, a Swiss think tank on foreign policy, I gained essential skills as a team leader. Personally I find it most important to always remain authentic. In our team, I appreciate and empower open discussions about occurring issues and our constructive feedback culture.

Biggest Success?:

My team and partners. In my eyes, having the right people around you is absolutely key for a successful business. Therefore, I have put a lot of time into finding the most suited employees for our startup.

Most Challenging Moment?:

Finding the courage to start over after a downfall and learning from past failures.

Favorite Places/Destinations?:

When I was younger, I wanted to explore our planet as much as possible and broaden my horizon. I went on several months long backpacking trips. Sometimes I tried to spend as little money as possible, which was a big difference to the very comfortable life I was used to back home. My main learning I took with me was that there’s another way, too. This fuels my vision for Legartis and that there is another way in law, too.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AMMy very own morning ritual is going for a swim in the beautiful Limmat river that crosses the city of Zurich where I live. No matter the temperature, I do that even in winter. I just love a fresh start into my day!

10:00 AMIn the office, I sit together with my team for meetings and spend ample time on the phone with potential customers and investors.

12:00 PM I’m a huge fan of Italian and Japanese food. My go-to-restaurant at the moment is yume-ramen in Zurich, I could eat their special noodle soups every day.

7:00 PMMost likely, I am pitching the Legartis Contract Intelligence solution at a startup event or in front of investors.

11:00 PMOnce per week, my best buddies and I are attending a yoga class. After the relaxing bending and stretching, we go for a well-deserved beer. Cheers!
