In addition to his career in investment banking, Gustavo founded Cancer Frontiers Inc. an internet based B2B provider of genetic oncology drugs. How did you get into the industry?:

I have always been interested in the role that higher education plays in life opportunities. After examining the college counseling industry, I was disheartened to find out that college counseling services existed primarily for wealthy families. I saw surprising statistics, like those that point out public high school students have only one counselor per 500 students and most high schools (70%) don’t have a college counselor at all! I decided to develop an affordable college counseling solution for high school students.

Emerging industry trends?:

I see a movement within the higher education prep market towards equity. Parents, students, businesses, and academics are trying to level the playing field in college admissions and attract the best and the brightest students.

Industry opportunities and challenges?:

The biggest challenge in the college admissions/prep industry is changing the perceptions of stakeholders. Unfair admissions processes and opportunities based on income and status have been a part of higher education since its inception and changing the perception of institutions that have been around for 300+ years is not done overnight. Except for the recent college admissions scandal, the college admissions system has been working for colleges. Acceptance rates are lower than ever, endowments are soaring, and people are clamoring for spots at universities. The public outcry heard in the wake of the scandal has forced universities to reevaluate an entrenched way of doing business.

What's next for the Business in the near future?:

MyKlovr is expanding by leaps and bounds everyday. We are thrilled to be working with a slew of corporate clients and are excited to expand into government agencies and associations. We want to help ease the college admissions process for as many families as we can!

I would advise those in the college prep space not to be intimidated by the big players that dominate the industry. The college admissions process is changing drastically and needs creative thinkers ready to level the playing field.

I believe that my most significant successes are the contributions I have made to further cancer research. To honor my mother’s brave battle with cancer, I have dedicated time, resources, and funding to assist in eradicating cancer.
