What Else To Know

My Goal of the Day:

To learn something new. Being a professor, this comes with the territory. I don’t believe it has to be a major discovery, though, but it’s important to keep learning. For example, did you know cows sleep laying down like humans?

My Thought of the Day:

I have a magnet in my office that says: “You are responsible for the energy you bring to this space.” I had originally put it up as a reminder for people visiting my office, but over time realized that maybe it’s a reminder to me! I try to think about the energy I’m putting it out into the world.

My Action of the Day:

To identify at least one thing to be grateful for and to offer my gratitude to it.

My Deed of the Day:

Self-care is important, so I try to take some time to give myself what I need, even if it’s just for 15 minutes. Sometimes I don’t know what I need, so I might take 15 minutes to reflect, shut my eyes, and/or listen to my favorite songs.

My Tip of the Day:

Be kind to someone else or do a good deed when no one else is there to witness it, you won’t receive any sort of reward from it, or you weren’t asked. Kind deeds make a difference no matter how or when they’re done, but doing something kind for the sake of being kind is how we eradicate hate.

Tell Us More:

What do you love most about Your City?

Its beauty. The way it looks during the various seasonal changes. You can’t beat the beauty of fall until it’s cloaked in snow. The spring feels so picturesque with the blossoms in every color until the summer sunsets fill the sky with pinks, purples, and everything in between.

Its energy. Morgantown is a college town, so it’s bustling with excitement during the times WVU is in session. During the summer and holiday breaks, it transforms into a slower-paced – but not sleepy – town full of farmers markets and festivals.

Its people. Morgantown can be a very friendly town that can throw you off if you’re not used to strangers striking up conversations with you in the grocery store! Just yesterday, I was second in line to offer to help a woman and her kids who were accidently stranded at a restaurant without her keys. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet some of my closest friends, fantastic colleagues, and an ever-expanding social circle of like-minded people.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

My favorite breakfast is probably a smoothie or oatmeal. My favorite restaurant is Apple Annie’s, with it’s homestyle meals and delicious sweets.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Sleeping! I am not an early morning riser…

10:00 AM – Either teaching, at my office, or working from home. Probably enjoying a coffee wherever I am, though.

12:00 PM – Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

My absolute favorite lunch spot closed a few years ago, and I still pine for their eggplant sandwiches. Outside of that, I might be enjoying a mandarin chicken salad, a sushi box, or a fall soup.

7:00 PM –  Spending time with my family! Our evening ritual – after we all get home and the homework is done and the dogs have been fed – includes eating dinner together, playing a game or playing outside depending on the weather, and then winding down for bedtime.

11:00 PM – In bed, probably watching a cooking show or one of my favorite episodes of a 1980s-1990s sitcom.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Nothing fancy or expensive – water with spearmint. I try to drink at least 64 ounces a day. I like citrus fruit-infused water as well, but find that spearmint just tastes so good. I’m never far from my water.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I don’t use Instagram often. It’s a lot of noise and superficiality when I feel we have enough of that. The apps I use most often are my weather app and my bank app! Our weather changes so quickly and so often, that it’s important to know how many layers I’ll need on a given day. And, as an expert in families, I know that the most common source of arguments is money, so I find it important to check my family’s finances and budget to ensure we are where we thought we’d be. Okay, and Pinterest. 😊

What should everyone try at least once?

Something outside their own comfort zones. It might be traveling alone or calling someone they haven’t talked to in a while or jumping out of a plane (with a parachute, of course), but it can be invigorating and a tremendous boost to self-esteem and self-confidence!

Where do you enjoy getting lost? In a botanical garden.
