Kendra Scott started her company in 2002, just three months after her first son was born, with only $500. Known for her dynamic use of color and genuine materials, Kendra’s commitment to innovation, quality and detail has brought her from a small start-up to a billion-dollar brand that has won over loyal fans, media and celebrities alike. With over 2,000 employees, Kendra Scott boasts a thriving web business and over 90 standalone stores, and has expanded beyond fashion jewelry into the categories of fine jewelry, home décor, and beauty. 

Since she began her company, Kendra has lived by three core values: Family, Fashion and Philanthropy. She created a brand and culture that authentically values giving back and making a positive difference in the community. The Kendra Scott company maintains a focus on its customers and the causes close to their hearts, having donated over $30 million to local, national and international causes since 2010.

How did you get into the industry?:

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and I couldn’t ignore the potential of the white space I was noticing in the industry for quality designs made with genuine stones, at a price any woman could afford. So I set out to design my own. I took a few jewelry making and wire wrapping classes, sought out the most beautiful stones I could find, and created the designs I knew women like me had been searching for. 

Then, I took my box of handmade designs door to door around Austin (with my newborn son on my hip) hoping that someone would give me a chance. I always joke that I don’t know if the stores felt sorry for me or just loved the jewelry. But the truth is, that personal contact made all the difference. By meeting with these stores face-to-face, they understood that I was a real person, creating high-quality and attainable jewelry that I was passionate about. 

Ideal experience for a customer/client?:

We have something called the “Sister Rule” in our company. We believe in treating each of our customers like family, as if our own brother or sister walked through the door looking for help. We are committed to providing that WOW! experience for each and every customer, and as a result we’ve built a well-deserved reputation of creating truly memorable experiences. But our commitment to that WOW experience has never been just about impressing others. It has always been about creating an authentic connection – creating joy.

How do you motivate others?:

I believe compassion builds passion, and kindness builds loyalty. Give that to your team, and they will give you their all. We are a woman-founded, women-led company, and just like many of my employees, I’m a mom. At Kendra Scott, we believe in three core pillars: Family, Fashion, and Philanthropy – Family always comes first. I wish more employers understood the benefit of a supportive, welcoming, encouraging work environment. Because I’ve found that when you make the effort to support your employees’ full lives, they will be full in their work too.  

Career advice to those in your industry?:

If you dream big, work hard, and treat others with kindness, anything is possible.

What makes you the best version of yourself?:

Learning to let go of the idea of the perfect “work-life balance.” There is no such thing as balance, as any working mother will tell you! Every day is different, with its own set of struggles and challenges. Some days I feel like Wonder Woman – I can be the best mom to my three boys and be successful in my work. And on other days, I feel like I’m just fighting to get by. But when I learn to be kind to myself and let go of this idea of perception that we all chase, that’s when I find I’m the best version of myself.

What are your aspirations? (Personal and Business):

I love traveling each summer with my family, and every time we visit somewhere new, I add another favorite to my list. Currently at the top? Walking the streets of Florence, Italy, bathing in the sun in the Bahamas, or exploring the lake trails in our very own hometown – Austin, Texas.


You Do Good – Three words my stepfather Rob spoke to me during his battle with brain cancer, and today they are the heart behind my passion for giving back.
