To me, New York feels like a celebration of life in all its forms. I find that the beautiful differences in humanity are not only supported, but embraced, cherished, and uplifted here. I love the varying forms of passion I see in each of its residents. And I love the never-ending options of places to go, things to try, and people to learn from.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
I always eat a piece of super dark chocolate as soon as I wake up – it helps get me going! Then I make steel cut oats and mix in almond butter, chia seeds, cinnamon, and fruit. If I know it’s going to be a busy or early morning, I make overnight oats so it’s all ready to go.
It’s rare I eat out for breakfast but I love Brindle Room and Cafe Mogador, both in the East Village, for brunch.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – Even as a kid, I’ve always been a night owl (read: not an early riser!), so unless it’s a very special circumstance, I’m still sleeping.
10:00 AM – This varies a lot depending on the day and the week. some days I’m teaching at this time, others I’m in rehearsal, or I might be practicing yoga or taking a dance class. If I have a day off, there’s a good chance you’ll find me still in bed, catching some extra sleep!
12:00 PM – Favorite Lunch spot/meal?
If I’m in a rush, I often grab a smoothie from Liquiteria – it’s easy, portable, and filling. My go-to lunch spot, Wayside Cafe, recently closed, so I’ve been exploring other places for good salads, sandwiches, or bowls.
7:00 PM – Also varies depending on the day. Several days of the week I teach evening classes, which I love. It’s such a great opportunity for people to process their day, both physically and mentally, and then begin to settle and unwind for rest. If I’m not teaching and the weather is fairly nice, I love long solo walks around this time – it clears my head and just makes me feel good. I’m also happy to use this time to catch up with friends over dinner.
11:00 PM – As I said, I’m a natural night owl, so I’m still awake. Usually I’ll try to be winding down by now. At the end of the day, I like watching something that makes me laugh. Afterwards, I spend the rest of the night reading (I’m always in the middle of multiple books!) and journaling.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
I drink a TON of water throughout the day – I always have my water bottle within reach. In the morning, I add a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, which is super energizing and great for gut health. Later in the day I have at least one, usually two, iced coffees. I only drink socially, but when I do, I love a glass of Malbec or Sauvignon Blanc.
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
Instagram is definitely my most used app. I got rid of my Facebook years ago, so it’s my only form of social media. I mostly use it to stay connected with friends and family and see what everyone’s up to, but @3rdritual is a favorite of mine! Other accounts I love are: @yogaruparodstryker for his wisdom, @drpattikim for healthy living advice, @portal.ido for intelligent movement, and @therow for a daily dose of art.
What should everyone try at least once? Hang gliding!
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
Book stores! In books themselves. In good conversation. Roaming around cities. In movement. In stillness. A quote I love from one of my favorite books, ‘A Field Guide to Getting Lost,’ says, “To lose yourself: a voluptuous surrender… utterly immersed in what is present so that its surroundings fade away… to be lost is to be fully present.” That being said, I’m happy to be “lost” in anything I love.
