Career Snapshot:
Before becoming an award-winning filmmaker, Susie Singer Carter majored in communications and journalism at UCLA where she wrote for the Daily Bruin. During that time, she and another singer/actress formed a pop band called Too Chix (Two Chicks). Chuck Lorre, (before he was the “Chuck Lorre” –  the writer, producer and composer, called the “King of Sitcoms”) produced the duo. They recorded two of Lorre’s songs, Bad Dream in Hollywood (on Rhino Records) and French Kissing (in the USA) before the group fell apart. Lorre later sent Too Chix’ demo of French Kissing (in the USA) to Debbie Harry and in 1986 it became a moderate radio hit in the US, peaking at #57 on the Billboard Hot 100. Susie began her current career writing and producing 26 episodes of the tween competition show, DANCE REVOLUTION, while writing, producing and co-directing 13 half-hour episodes tween show CAKE (nominated for an Environmental Media Award) for CBS’s Saturday morning block.
At the same time.Susie moved into features writing and producing BRATZ: THE MOVIE starring Janel Parrish (PRETTY LITTLE LIARS), Jon Voight (RAY DONOVAN) and Logan Browning (DEAR WHITE PEOPLE) for Lionsgate. Although Susie wrote the final screenplay for Bratz The Movie, she lost her credit in Writers Guild arbitration to the bewilderment of the producers and director. Her name appears as screenwriter on the final movie poster. She also forfeited her Associate Producer title when she entered into an appeal which resulted in the loss of both credits. After BRATZ, Susie garnered the attention of Fox Television Studios and was given a blind script deal which culminated in the animated pilot, SURVIVING HAWKING, directed by Susie and starring Bryan Cranston (BREAKING BAD) and Adam Brody (THE O.C.). Susie went on to co-produce the critically acclaimed SOUL SURFER for Sony starring Dennis Quaid (AMERICAN CRIME STORY) and Helen Hunt (AS GOOD AS IT GETS). She followed that writing the screenplay for the animated musical TWINKLE TOES LIGHTS UP NEW YORK for Skechers. In 2017, Susie attracted an outpouring of positive reaction from audiences all over the world as well as the entertainment industry writing, producing, directing and acting in her first short film, MY MOM AND THE GIRL starring Valerie Harper (RHODA) and Liz Torres (GILMORE GIRLS). The film is a “joyous look at Alzheimer’s” which has screened at over 50 film festivals worldwide and earned dozens of major awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress. Best Ensemble, to name a few) that led to an Oscar Qualified status. The film has worldwide distribution and was the centerpiece of a national Mother’s Day campaign for Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles and UsAgainstAlzhiemer’s. It also was signaled out by KCET and was chosen to participate in the prestigious Fine Cuts program airing October 17, 2018. The film is also available on ShortsTV, iTunes, Google, and Amazon Prime. (TRAILER:
Susie also wrote and directed two documentaries, BREAKING GOOD and WOMEN WHO WROTE THE WAY, honoring trailblazing female writers who have been responsible for cracking the glass ceiling, which both premiered at the Writers Guild of America for Women’s History Month. Susie recently finished the screenplay, PLAIN JANE, adapted from the best seller of the same name. Susie is a member of the Alliance of Women Directors as well as the Committee of Women Writers of the Writers Guild of America West.

What Else To Know

Tell Us More:

What do you love most about Your City?

Everything but the traffic.  I am a native Angeleno, so LA is my home. Most of my family and life-long friends live here. I love the diversity and the wealth of opportunities. I love the ability to ride bikes at the beach and then hike the mountains… conceivably in one day! And of course, the near perfect weather.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

AGH! I’m a night owl, so I rarely see a breakfast menu! But when I do, I go for a Belgium Waffle with berries and lots of whipped crème!!

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM –  Depends…. If I’m writing or editing, I might just be going to bed! If I’m shooting, I’m probably on my way to the set. Other than that, I’m asleep. I’m definitely not a morning person.

10:00 AM –  Unless I have a morning meeting (which I try to avoid), I’m feeding and walking my 2 dogs – a 7-month-old Yorkie, Alfie and a 1 ½ year old Yorkie-Poo, Gidget – and then I’m at my desk, drinking my first travel mug of coffee and going through emails.

12:00 PM – Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?

I usually don’t have time for lunches, but when I do, I usually like to go to Superba in Venice. It’s close by and I love the atmosphere. You can eat outside in a beautiful courtyard and the food is healthy AND good!!7:00 PM –  If I’m not working, I’m on my way to a dance class, running errands, walking the pups, getting ready for some event or driving to one. And in that case, I would be in hella-traffic praying I get there on time!

11:00 PM – Probably eating a late dinner with my producing partner/roommate and watching the Daily Show.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

I’m never without my travel mug of coffee with coconut milk and a large (32 oz) bottle of Trader Joe’s alkaline water. (I swear it tastes the best!) I also like sparking water with meals.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

For work – Final Draft, Photoshop, Facebook and IMDB. For my personal use, right now it’s my Beachbody Workout App. When I’m working it’s really hard to get to the gym, so these online classes have been a lifesaver!!! Autumn is a workout goddess! As for IG, I don’t really have a favorite account. It’s really the best way to stay current with friends and colleagues.

What should everyone try at least once?

Dancing. Alone. In a group. With partner. Doesn’t matter. Just dance.
